Well after nearly 1 1/2 years on LJ, I’ve decided to move my journal to a self-hosted solution at jonwestfall.com using NucleusCMS. If anyone wants to join me, I’ll be happy to set you up an account over there with either your own domain name (If you have it / want to get it) or a subdomain off of one of my multiple domain names (i.e.

Server is a very subjective term for me. To me, a server is anything that runs services to be used by other computers. Granted, this definition turns every computer I own into a server (since they run P2P apps (And I mean old-skool peer-to-peer windows smb networking kind – not that new fangled stuff)). So I guess my definition should be something like:
A computer that primarily runs services to be accessed by other computers.
There, now under that definition, only my Genesis box qualifies for ‘server’ status. It runs Win2k Server with MS Exchange on it. Great test bed for a windows applications. It used to be a suse box, but eventually (about 2 months ago) I realized I needed a MS box back for some house-running tasks (i.e. home automation, Linksys media server, etc..). So I’ve been missing my linux box. But today, a new day is at hand:
THE DAY OF 2 SERVERS. Yes, I now have 2 “servers” in the house (sitting right next to each other actually). The new server’s name is Bleedin
gHeart, taken from a picture of some pretty flowers on this month’s Avon catelog (Yes, Karey is your Avon Source.). BH will be running Red Hat 9, and I’m unsure what services it may offer to the outside world. Its deffinetly not a file server (It only has a 3 gig hard drive), but as a small web server / test server, it should be fine. I’m setting it up to do nifty geeky things (ask details if you really want to) from a network level. I’m pretty psyched. Its rare I can still get excited over technology…
So if you’re interested, here is the current Jon Computer Tally:
1. Genesis Server (Pentium 2, 256 MB Memory, Around 54 Gig of storage, Win2K Server)
2. BleedingHeart Server (Pentium, very small memory, former IBM Aptiva owned by Ashley – Thanks for the donation!, Red Hat 9)
3. MRKrabs (Laptop) (Pentium 4, 1 GB Memory, 40 GB HD, Win XP Pro)
4. JWestfall (Tablet) (Pentium 4 / Centrino, 512 MB Memory, 60 GB HD, Win XP Pro / Tablet)
5. Acer Extensa Laptop (Pentium 2, 64 MB Ram, Windows 98, Spare laptop for visitors)
6. CTX Laptop (My original laptop, then my moms, now back in my possession. Pentium, 16 MB Ram, not used much anymore)
7. Compaq LTE Elite (486, 4 MB Ram, Gift from Karey’s dad. Very Small – So Small I used it when MRKrabs was in the Hospital last october for email che
cks / surfing!)
8. HP IPaq 6315 (Named, unorginally right now, Pocket_PC).
9. An old Packard Bell I got this weekend that may not work since I slid down 4 steps with it under my arm and smacked it down. Its in my trunk. It was donated to me by the same great people who donated BH to me.
10. A pentium 2 with a 4 GB HD and 64 MB of RAM that lives in Parma running Win XP Pro. My dad uses it for his daily email deletion and map generation.
So what’s next? Well, I got my eyes on a motorola smartphone coming out that’s techincally a pocket PC, but I have to save up for that one. Karey’s been squaking about her computer, so maybe in the next year she’ll acquire a new one and I’ll have another one to add to my collection.
Eternally a geek I suppose.
Well, I was at the Olive Garden today and as I was walking in I heard a loud booming voice of Mr. Boddy
This weekend, Ashley & Will & I will be heading up to the lake ( Karey will, unfortunatly, probably not be able to attend 🙁 ). When they leave Saturday night, I’ll stay up as Mom’s friend Melody & her husband Herb will be coming in Sunday & Monday. My lake house is turning into a resort!
Next weekend is Karey & her friend Frances at the lake.
Akron is raising my hourly rate for the fall, so I’ll probably continue teaching A+ on saturdays there. It’ll be fun to only have to teach at UA once a week. Starting this fall, however, I’ll probably begin giving out another email addy to my students, a non-akron one.
Got an interesting email today from someone with a very good name, Jon Westfall:
I typed my name into my browser just to see what would pop up. Yea i was bored. I was surprised to see your site. I guess its not that wierd to see someone shares your name. What is strange is that I grew up in Akron OH. My step daughter still lives there and is going to Akron U. If you are a teacher you may even be teaching her. Just thought I would drop you a line and share the wierdness.
So I guess one of my name-alikes finally caught up with me. I’ve searched for Jon Westfall in browsers for years and found out some interesting things about other Jons, but never contacted them. Its a small world after all….
Well, I didn’t expect to be lying in bed right now. Figured I’d be close to Main St. exit on 77, heading down to teach. BUT on the way down pleasant valley road, I got a Yahoo! Mail alert (I have a rule set up to SMS me whenever email from anyone at uakron.edu comes in) telling me that classes were cancelled.
Just hope this power outage doesn’t do what it did last time and follow me home – anyone remember the great blackout of August 2003? Well, I was supposed to teach that night too…
I’m working on a mailing list for SMS messages to my friends cell phones / email accounts. I figure its a quick way for us to communicate. It also got me thinking – anyone else done anything innovative with communications lately?
Well, its official now, I’m a hardcore geek. I just had DirecWay installed at my lake house so I will be plugged in no matter what dwelling I am at. It works pretty good so far… and I’ll report more later on it as I use it.
My mom left me a voicemail telling me that she was heading up here around 9:30, so she should get here before T, H, and K leave with me at 2.
Well, I think I’ve figured out what I’m going to do at the Lake for internet. Direcway is looking pretty good. 15 month commitment, but hell, I’ll be here for atleast 4 years… 😉
Plus, it will be a lot easier to stay in contact with my friends at home and around the country with IMs flowing freely, as well as email. Can’t loose my rep. as being a quick email answerer.
Weekster replied to my comment about Scsi staring me down earlier today. I swear, that pig has a perpetually scared look on its face. I could be bringing it a plate of goodies (ha… like I’d do that… pig’s lucky if she gets a piece of lettuce from me every so often – as an obese person myself, I fell it necessary to prevent guinea pig obesity) or weilding a large axe at that guinea pig and she’d still have the same look on her face… scared. Pixel, on the other hand, just doesn’t give me the time of day (most likely because it lacks a watch… ) anyway, Pixel (or more apt… Megapixel (couldn’t stop obesity from that one)) just gives me these looks like “Who are you and what are you doing near my hou
se?”. Feel like a damn stalker around that pig. Doesn’t help Pixel’s sister has that weird scared look next door. Pixel probably thinks I’m the kind of person who’d break a ming vase over an enemies head for fun (well… so what if its an accurate description?) just by Scuz’s expressions.
Had a strange dream last night about hamsters. I had this hamster sleeping on my stomach as I was sleeping. Lucky thing it was a dream considering i sleep under high-held covers and on my stomach. In real life, that hamster would be suffocated and squished. Karey says its a subconcious desire to have a “new hammy” as she put it. I asked her when she went into dream interpretations. After all, I’m the one with the damn B.A. in psychology. Fat lot of good its doing me in the dream interpretation and guinea pig relations departments.
It did do me a lot of good while noon-aiding on Friday though. I think the other noon-aides mistook my letting the first graders speak their minds to me for inexperience with kids. Truth is, I love it when a first grader shares their thoughts with me. Not just on an academic level (although I could find zillions of things to study first graders for… their encoding and retention is simply amazing!). Kids really do have the most interesting things to say.
I’m laying here listening to Elton John. Sir Elton John mind you – Anyone know
why a person from England would write a song named Philadelphia Freedom? Shouldn’t it be something like “Pinner Freedom” since he was born in that area of Greater London? And the line “From the day that I was born I’ve waved the flag” coming from a guy who’s country favored sticking my country with a bill for a war they started (ok, so we were still colonies in 1764) and then a mere few years later torched our presidential mansion (i.e. 1814 or so…) just sounds ironic to me. Not that I have anything against the British now… after all, without them, I wouldn’t have this language. Besides, I doubt Sir Elton has had many coherent thoughts since “the day” he was born, March 25, 1947.
But I guess a guy who was born with the name Reginald Kenneth Dwight can pretty much say whatever he wants.
Well, that’s about all for me tonight. I suppose I’ll head to sleep soon, maybe I’ll be able to last until Karey gets out of work 😉
This is the first saturday since a long time ago that I don’t have to teach A+. Its nice to be able to just chill out down here in PA with Karey. I’m sure mom will read this, so let me tell you : I’m still alive, and will most likely call today or tomorrow. Remember, any voicemail you send me I don’t get until I have a chance to check it through a real phone, since my phone doesn’t get reception at Karey’s house.
Anyway, I don’t know what our plans are for today. Last night we had pizza and watched a few movies (Scary Movie 3, Chicago) and had Karey’s favorite mixed drink (Sprite & Blueberry Schnapps). The drink wasn’t too great, but she seemed to like it.
Chetan didn’t break too much yesterday, and no big tickets came in, so PH is doing well this morning. 2 tickets in the queue, neither needing attention.
Well, I’ll probably check into my internet life later today again.
